1. What is Camlock Fittings?

Camlock fittings, also recognized as cam and groove coupling, is a type of quick hose coupling that usually functions as quick connection and disconnection for pumps, tanks, and equipment. Camlock fittings are known for it features of simplicity, reliability, and versatility, they are widely applied industrial couplings as they are easy and reliable means of connecting and disconnecting hoses without using any tools.

2. What are the Camlock Fittings specification?

Camlock fittings are designed and made in compliance with EN 14420-7 standards (DIN 2828). EN 14420-7 standards are approved by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) in September 2004.

Camlock fittings designed and produced in compliance with EN 14420-7 are interchangeable with MIL-C-27487 standard, but there is a difference in terms of hose shank design, thread, and part number.

Camlock Fittings are used for hose-to-hose or hose-to-pipe connections mainly used for transferring liquids. These fittings are also known as Evertite, cam lock fittings, or cam lock couplings. Camlock fittings are suitable for liquids application and dry bulk products application, however, it’s not recommended for gas and steam application.

Camlock fittings are available in Aluminum, Stainless Steel, and Brass material. Its working pressure is up to 250 PSI. Camlock fittings are available in the threaded end (BSP / NPT) or hose shank connection and size ranges from 1/2” to 4” (DN15 to DN 100).

3. What are the common applications for Camlock Fittings?

Camlock fittings find versatility in their wide variety of users across many applications in distinct industries, below are examples of the different industries in which Camlock fittings are most commonly used:

  • Agriculture – Camlock fitting's durability and high corrosion-resistant perform well for agriculture applications, where its fittings are exposed to temperature, humidity fluctuations, and chemicals.

  • The petroleum industry puts much focus on safety and this benefits the clients in petrochemical the most for the safe and easy-to-use installation procedure and design offered by Camlock fittings. Stainless steel material Camlock fittings are mainly selected as it offers the simplicity and durability required in the hazardous oil and gas industry.

  • Ink Manufacturing – Quick connect and disconnect of Camlock fittings benefits ink manufacturing clients, due to their frequency of change in the pipe connections.

Camlock fittings are obvious options for industrial cleaning providers since it provides simplification in transportation and storage while preventing leaks in the field.

  • Military – Defense applications require fittings that are lightweight, reliable, and quick to install. Aluminum material Camlock fittings are the preferred choice to ensure rapid deployment and reliable performance when stakes are high.

In general, Camlock fittings are useful to any industry that wants to streamline assembly for fluid or material transfer applications.

4. What are the benefits of Camlock Fittings?

The main benefit of Camlock fittings is their easy installation process. Unlike most other couplings, Camlock fittings are able to connect or disconnect in seconds without additional tools. This makes them especially useful in configurations that involve frequent piping changes, and they can reduce downtime in virtually any fluid transfer application.

Furthermore, to their simple and quick installation, Camlock fittings also feature the following advantages:

  • Durability – Camlock fittings are suitable for the most extreme working environments, including those in oil and gas and mining applications. Camlock fittings are built using durable materials such as stainless steel, allowing them to resist wear and corrosion across varied work sites.

  • Versatility – Camlock fittings are able to handle the majority of liquid, powder, and gas transfer applications without premature wear, thanks to their rugged construction. Its availability in various materials and configurations further enhances their versatility, allowing users from diverse industries to find the right configuration/construction that suit their requirements.

  • Cost-effectiveness – Camlock fittings are an affordable option that can fit in the majority of users’ budgets. Further cost savings in the form of reduced labor and maintenance costs in the long term due to its ease of use and reliability.

These advantages above make Camlock fittings a preferred choice for a wide range of fluid and material transfer applications.

5. What are the material types of Camlock Fittings?

Users should choose a Camlock fitting with the right composition to match their application’s requirement to enjoy its maximum benefits. The great thing is Camlock fittings come in many varieties, each with its own performance and characteristics:

  • Stainless steel – Stainless steel material is preferred for most manufacturing fittings due to its strength, corrosion resistance, and able to withstand extreme temperatures. This combination of properties makes stainless steel material the ideal option for food and beverage system applications, which require frequent high-temperature sanitation protocols. Moreover, their durability and corrosion resistance properties also lend themselves to marine, oil and gas, and other similarly demanding environments.

  • Brass – Although brass material is not as strong as compared to stainless steel material, it is still highly resistant to damage and corrosion. Brass material performs especially well against saltwater corrosion, so it is most commonly found in marine system applications.

  • Aluminum – Aluminum material is more cost-effective as compared to stainless steel material, at the same time it’s also a lightweight metal with an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. This makes Aluminum material a good alternative for general industrial applications.

6. What are the different types of Camlock Fittings?

There is a variety of Camlock Fittings ranging from Type A to Type DP. The table below shows the full description by Camlock type and connection type.

7. Guide to Camlock Fittings O-ring seal material selection

Camlock fittings O-ring seal material is key to determine the overall temperature range of the Camlock fittings. Below are the O-ring seal materials that we offer:

  • NBR: It is a commonly used seal material for Camlock fittings. Nitrile is a synthetic rubber that improved chemical resistance and temperature capabilities to neoprene. NBR material seal offers good resistance to oils and solvents, aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, petroleum oils, and gasoline's as well as animal fats and lacquer solvents. Its poor resistance against strong oxidizing agents, chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones, and esters.

  • EPDM: its offers great resistance to ozone, heat, steam, strong acid, and alkaline. However, It is not recommended for use in oils, solvents, and aromatic hydrocarbons.

  • Viton: it is called fluorinated hydrocarbon seal material offers outstanding resistance against acid, aliphatic hydrocarbons, oils, gasoline, and many corrosive industrial applications. This material is excellent for resistance to temperature, weathering, and gas permeability.

  • However, it is not appropriate for use against amines, esters, ketones, steam, or low-temperature service.

  • PTFE: this seal material is resistant to nearly all chemicals, other than that PTFE also has good temperature capabilities. It has very limited flow capabilities which required the use of a rubber filler.

As PTFE seal material is slightly porous, the choice of filler is dictated by the application medium or temperature.

8. How to measure dimensions of Camlock Fittings?

It's relatively easy to measure Camlock fittings, for instance, if the hose shank or threaded end is 2” then the Camlock fittings would be known as 2” Camlock fittings.

Camlock fittings sizes are measured by using the Outside Diameter (OD) of the adapter head or the Inside Diameter (ID) of the coupler.

Examples of how to measure the fitting size are as depicted in the images below.

9. How to disconnect Camlock Fittings?

The disassembly commonly comprises a male groove and a female coupler.

  1. For disconnection of adaptor from the coupler, firstly depressurize the connection of the Camlock fitting.

  2. Pull up the levers to above of cam handle then remove the adaptor from the coupler.

  3. Whenever adaptors or couplers are not in use, it's best to connect them to a dust cap or dust plug to prevent them from damage.
